Hot Race Day At Donnybrook

Hot Race Day At Donnybrook
Herald Reporter

DUST and smoke hungover Salisbury's Donnybrook motor racing circuit yesterday as the cream of Rhodesia's riders and drivers battled for supremacy in a full day of fast, vicious racing.

A sunburnt crowd watched Rob Rushforthblow up his beautiful BMW's motor, Dick Mawson loose his steering in the S-bends, rally driver Eric Partington earn applause for knocking over the most fence-posts in the greatest distance at Donnybrook, and Formula Vee king Trevor Gilbert's triumphant start of the day end in the dust.

"Mac" McOran-Campbell's Porsche-BMW blasted away as expected, keeping him in second and third places in national cars and championship scratch heats.

But Royce Love commanded these races, way up front, in his amazing Chevron B21. Ron Watt, although some distance behind Love, held his second position with some brilliant driving.

The motorcycle events were dominated by the Petersen brothers, who dashed back to Salisbury from Johannesburg after their commendable efforts there, with Clive Mawson tailing them through
straights and bends alike.

In the Formula Vee events, Rich Smith, Roy Marshall and Trevor Gilbert battled frantically much to the crowd's delight, to hold off Mike Wesson, who took third and first places in the two scratch heats.

The women's race did not provide the excitement that might have been expected from the male chauvinists in the crowd but Anne Roomer's driving was remarkable in a very fast race nevertheless.
